Summary of the Position:

Research Engineer III (Mechanical, Industry & Manufacture Engineering) in Quaker Houghton’s Center of Innovation (COI) Group for the global Metal Working Fluids (MWF) Division in Conshohocken, PA, USA. The person in this position will be responsible for the design, planning, managing, and execution of metal cutting and machining projects conducted for customer support, new product development, and research purposes. With the objective of much of the work being the testing and assessment of metalworking fluid performance in metal cutting, the person will need to possess a strong competency in metal cutting fundamentals and operations, as well as a strong understanding of metalworking fluid technology. Understanding of fluid technology includes areas such as fluid surface properties and interactions, rheology, as well as colloidal properties. In addition, a cursory understanding of fluid chemical composition and the influence of specific chemical components on machining performance will be beneficial. The position will require effective communication skills (written and verbal) to discuss and communicate plans, details of technical approaches, and test results to both internal and external customers. This often-involving discussions and meetings with customer’s manufacturing and tooling engineering personnel to plan and review machining studies. The person will also plan and implement the expansion of our CNC machining capabilities in Conshohocken by the addition of new machine tools and operators into our new Customer Solution Center over the next five years or so. With Quaker Houghton CNC machining centers being located at various regions around the globe, this person will need to maintain strong communication and at times collaboration, with other Quaker Houghton global machining centers. This to maintain effective knowledge sharing and technology transfer, as well as coordination of global CNC activities. In addition, Quaker Houghton maintains a strong relationship and activity with various university engineering and machining departments, through support and sponsorship of machining projects. This person will need to fill a significant role in this by providing guidance and communication relative to future project identification, planning and execution. With resource conservation and sustainability maintaining an important element in industrial manufacturing, the person will also work to develop and study machining test methods and data acquisition systems which effectively correlates machining results to important sustainability metrics.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, from planning to execution and reporting, CNC machining projects focused on research and knowledge gain, customer support, and support of MW product development activities. This requires an understanding of machining operations, cutting tool technology, and metal workpiece composition and properties.
  • Continue to advance Quaker Houghton’s CNC machining test capabilities, through continued internal advances and expansion in machine tool capabilities, instrumentation, as well as increasing collaboration with external academic and technical facilities.
  • Grow existing understanding of the influence of MW fluid properties and composition on metal machining.
  • Stay informed and current on new industry trends as they relate to new and emerging machining techniques as well as new and emerging alloys and workpiece materials.
  • Communicate with QH sales and field engineers as well as customer manufacturing personnel, to discuss and plan machine testing required to address current and future customer and industry needs.
  • Work to promote QH as an industry leader in machine testing and assessment of metalworking fluid performance in machining operations. This via both technical publications and presentations

Qualifications and Skills:

  • This position requires a PhD degree in Industrial, Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering or similar (MS with 3+ years industrial experience, BS with at least 5+ years) and exposure to metal machining operations.
  • A basic knowledge of chemistry and chemical principles related to industrial fluids is preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic machining mechanics, with a strong working understanding of current tooling technology and materials science
  • Good knowledge and experience in tribology testing is a plus.
  • Good written and verbal presentation skills
  • Good knowledge of Word Processing software; Spreadsheet software; Internet software and Database software.
  • Knowledge and experience with CAD-CAM techniques
  • Preferred software skills: Matlab, Image J, AutoCAD, Solidworks Simulation, Mathematica, LabVIEW
  • Working knowledge of design of experimentation methodology is a plus.
  • Experience and working capabilities with microscopic techniques, including use of SEM-EDX, optical microscopy with use of digital imaging software, phase shifting microscopy, and metallurgical microscopic techniques.
  • Experience and knowledge of surface metrology equipment and techniques, such as surface contact profilometry and surface roughness parameters, use of coordinate measurement machines as well as optical comparators.
  • Knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes related to part fabrication for key industrial sectors such as automotive, heavy equipment, and aerospace.
