Chemist - New Product Development

Department: Research and Technology
Location: Norristown, PA

Summary of Position:

With a focus on R&D and product development, this position receives and completes projects based on focused New Product Development (NPD) Pipeline, and helps resolve manufacturing or sales issues. Interfaces within Research & Technology and other departments to develop new products, continuously improve existing products and assists to identify, evaluate, reduce cost and consolidate raw materials. 

The primary responsibility will involve the custom development of rolling oils for Houghton customers who use these oils to manufacture Aluminum and Copper rod and sheet products.  The chemist will be responsible for maintaining and improving existing formulations and for providing solutions to new application problems.

This position at times will require travel both domestically and internationally, and willingness/ability to do hands-on lab work and plant trials when required.

Responsibilities:

  • Works in an injury-free safe manner and identifies near miss opportunities for improvement. Works within Employee Health & Safety (EH&S) compliance for products and processes and completes all necessary training. Maintains clean and safe working area. Maintains lab equipment.
  • Develops and documents Lab procedures in the Houghton Quality System. Maintains precise and detailed Laboratory Notebook.
  • Receives projects from Group Leader or Lab Manager, or proposes new projects based on focused Business Plan, and works independently and diligently to complete
  • Responsible for timely tracking and disciplined completion of Project assignments, Research Reports, Customer Reports and helps resolve Manufacturing issues
  • Meets occasionally with vendors, coordinates and initiates project to evaluate, introduce, and help improve quality and costs of Raw Materials
  • Provides technical training and non-technical support to customers
  • Attends technical societies and seminars, and keeps abreast of new technology

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or chemical engineering with a minimum of 3 years of experience; or an MS degree with a minimum of 1 year of experience

Experience:

  • Excellent understanding of chemistry, formulations (specifically emulsion chemistry), and displays strong attention to details
  • Excellent knowledge in use of laboratory instrumentation used in lubrication testing
  • Demonstrated experience providing technical and non-technical support to customers, including troubleshooting and problem solving at customer facilities
  • Results-focused and committed to exceeding customer expectations
  • Follows Quality and Work Safety protocols precisely, completes projects and reporting on-time, and with diligence.  
  • Has excellent interpersonal skills and works well within Product group and other NPD members
  • Competence in Computer and Microsoft Office applications

Position of Scope:

  • Position requires the safe handling of hazardous materials and may require heavy lifting of 5-gallon pails.
  • Receives projects Group Leaders/Lab Managers at Center of Excellence within Regional structure of specific Product Line.
  • May attend Field support Trial Demonstrations and Application problem-solving at Customer locations in support of NPD.
