Supervisor, Production and Supply Chain Planning

Department: Operations and Supply Chain
Location: Detroit, MI

Summary of Position:

Develops and implements plans for just-in-time bulk production and tank wagon delivery as well as plans production to meet customer demand with consideration of working capital, timing and available resources that meet both customer and company financial goals.  Supervises bulk loaders.

Responsibilities:

  • Analyzes, determines and maintains minimum and maximum levels of raw materials and finished goods, adjusting minimum and maximum levels based on usage trends, product availability, plant capacities, equipment, processes and their interaction to prevent stock outs and excess inventory. Maintains running account of open orders, batch completion and inventory.  Adjusts batch sizes based on workload, labor constraints, equipment capacities and inventory levels.  Review MPS messages and recommends changes to settings.
  • Develops and maintains both the Master Production Schedule and the Bulk Logistics Schedules by working with Production and Maintenance to coordinate utilization and down time. Schedules delivery of outbound bulk finished goods.
  • Communicates status and changes to Customer Service, Sales or directly to customers.
  • Supervises 3 to 5 bulk loaders and schedules their work to match demand.
  • Analyzes Root Cause of Slow Moving / Obsolete finished goods and ensures materials are reworked to prevent more SMOs.  Reviews part containers, on-hold materials and expiring inventories of finished goods, and schedules these to be consumed into production batches.
  • Analyzes, determines and maintains minimum and maximum levels of non-inventory items to prevent stock outs of these supplies such as pails, safety gear, and other materials essential to production.
  • Advises Inventory Control of requirements and usage. Identifies production schedule issues such as JIT bulk production or raw material shortages and communicates to the Operations Manager, Production Supervisors or Inventory Controller as appropriate.  Schedules delivery of outbound bulk deliveries.
  • Plant leader on JDE project implementations such as work order and new business integration.
  • Designs and reviews reports to ensure JIT bulk delivery performance is monitored.  Analyzes performance data and reports opportunities for improvement to the Plant Leadership Team.
  • Leads root cause analysis on open overdue work orders and open overdue bulk deliveries.  Develops and implements corrective actions to improve the planning process.  Identifies cost saving and efficiency improvements such as reengineering the bulk work flow to promote a more efficient workflow.
  • Member of the Plant Leadership Team and the Plant Safety Committee/

 

Position Scope:

  • Key member of the Plant Leadership Team.  Responsible for planning production and for managing bulk logistics for just in time production and delivery to avoid customer plant service disruptions.  Plans appropriate finished goods stock levels and plans production in support of >40,000,000 KGs annually, half of which are JIT bulk deliveries. Analyzes and establishes stock levels needed and to support on time delivery targets for packaged goods.
  • Responsible for just in time delivery and projects or initiatives to improve it.
  • Leads root cause investigations on bulk late deliveries.
  • Plant lead for significant new business integration from acquisitions.
  • Active member of the Plant Leadership Safety Committee.
  • Supervises bulk loaders and coordinates work with shipping team lead.

Education/Experience:

  • College degree required.  Technical or Business major preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in production or supply chain planning and control in a manufacturing environment.
  • Prior supervisory or management experience required.
  • Lean office champion or Lean Six Sigma green belt preferred.
  • APICS CPIM certification a plus.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Above average verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills, both ERP and Excel.
  • High level of initiative and responsibility.
  • Solid decision making ability - strong business acumen.
  • Ability to influence in a matrixed organization.
