Center of Innovation, Metalworking Fluids - Summer Intern

We are seeking a co-op for 6 months beginning in May who will be working with support from the entire MW COI group, the primary area of study will be to conduct a project to further study the machining of 17-4 PH and duplex stainless steels, two materials which find wide use in fabrication of parts for use in EVs.

Job Responsibilities

  • Literature review and study of past machining of these materials
  • Development of model fluids enabling study of fluid composition effects on stainless steel machining (base oil viscosity, ester content and phosphorus additive content – likely compositional variables)
  • Develop design of experiments to study the effects of fluid composition variables on machinability
  • Define the machining operation, conditions and tooling to use in the machining tests
  • Collect and measure performance parameters (cutting forces, machined finish, tool wear, part dimensional accuracy)
  • From DOE and performance parameters measured – present conclusions on study
  • Utilizing new metallurgical sample prep equipment, prepare metallurgical samples and conduct microstructural analysis of both workpiece materials.
  • Write a short final report
  • Present project results in a final project presentation (internal)

Qualifications

  • Current 2nd or 3rd year student pursuing their Bachelor’s degree Chemical Engineering or Chemistry.
  • Attention to detail
  • Organized
  • Able to multi-task and work on several projects at a time.
  • Ability to analyze data in excel efficiently and present data in organized way
